(May 23, 2025) — The Riveters are hitting the road for the first time in the team’s second-ever USL W League match, and they will be seeking to bring home three points when they face Flower City 1872 in upstate New York on Saturday evening.
After an opening 0-0 draw with the Cleveland Force in which the Riveters had the better of possession, shots and territory, the tactics will only get minor tweaks rather than a major overhaul as the team tries to be sharper in the final third. Head coach Scott Gibson might have some minor tweaks to his starting 11 and the full list on team sheet, but changes are unlikely on the back four that helped record a clean sheet in the opening match — Abi Hugh, Piper Coffield, Natalia DiSora and Bella Vozar.
This will be the home opener for the Rochester-based team, which got off to a winning start to their season by picking up a 2-1 win at FC Buffalo on Monday. Flower City trailed 1-0 at half, but rallied for the win with goals by Emily Hanrahan and Catherine Rogers, who struck for the game-winner in the 89th minute.
The venue is a notable one, both in the history for the club and in women’s soccer.
The Rochester Community Sports Complex Stadium, which has cycled through many corporate-sponsored names in its past, was the longtime home of the Rochester Rhinos, rivals to the Riverhounds men’s team and the place where Hounds head coach Bob Lilley won the 2015 USL Championship title. The stadium also served as the home of the NWSL’s Western New York Flash from 2013-16 before the team relocated and became the North Carolina Courage, and it has hosted the U.S. Women’s National Team for international friendlies on four occasions — fitting for the hometown of the all-time U.S. top goal scorer, Abby Wambach.
